With almost 30 years of history, Dialogue in the Dark and its creator Andreas Heinecke have won – besides worldwide recognition — several international awards. With almost 30 years of history, Dialogue in the Dark and its creator Andreas Heinecke have won – besides worldwide recognition — several international awards. And today we at DSE want to share our joy with you: On June 15th, our program Dialogue in the Dark was awarded the 2017 Mariano Gago Ecsite in the category of sustainable success.

The European Network of Science Centres and Museums (Ecsite) gathers more than 350 organizations committed to inspire people with science and technology and enable dialogue between science and society. It was founded in 1989 by 23 organizations from the young European science centre scene and is very active until today.

Created in 2015, The Mariano Gago Ecsite awards encourage creative and impactful work within the informal science education sector. The award is named after José Mariano Gago (1948 — 2015), a key figure of European science engagement.

As mentioned, we won the sustainable success category. It highlights long-lasting impact as well as projects that embody the value of science engagement, that is visionary and socially relevant. DiD’s sustainable success can be easily verified looking at its history. Showcased for the first time in 1988 in Frankfurt, DiD has been with a constant worldwide presence in 188 cities, 44 countries, 5 continents, with 10 million visitors and 10,000 blind and partially sighted people employed.

Andreas Heinecke (DSE’s CEO) and Orna Cohen (DSE’ CCO) received the award in the city of Porto in Portugal. We would have wished all our partners and former partners to take part in this celebration. Sustainable success has been accumulated through the endurance, energy, and efforts of our all partners – from the first one to the most recent. Dreamers, social change makers, social entrepreneurs, museum and science centre personnel, business people and many others have believed in DiD and have trusted DSE to open a DiD hub in the five continents.

We thank you a lot, dear partners, and former partners, and we celebrate with you all. But we also shout out a big and impressive THANK YOU to all blind and partially sighted guides, all other staff and, last but not least, our visitors. This award was won thanks to your passion and commitment to grow together towards a more diverse and inclusive society.
